Plein Air Watercolor by Verna Pooler

This is a watercolor Verna Pooler painted during a plein air outing.  We were at the Winchuck Garden and Nursery where Verna created this artwork in one afternoon.  There a was a green chair in front of the towering purple verbena and blooming potted flowers.  It was an inviting scene that beckoned you to sit.  Verna captured this perfectly in her watercolor.

"Summer Sun" By Verna Pooler

This is a watercolor by Verna Pooler called "Summer Sun".  The way the sunflowers, vase and chicken salt and pepper shakers are painted  gives this work warmth and movement.  The placement and bright color  of the sunflowers lets you know the sun is shining on them.   Look at the movement in their petals and leaves.  Look at  weight of the flower's head bending  the thick stem in the back right.  We can almost imagine  a gentle summer breeze moving them. The sun shines through the ruby red vase and dances across the table cloth. The chickens are placed in such a way where one could image them walking across the tabletop as they enjoy the warm sun's rays. Lovely piece.
Verna's work is available at the Manely Art Center in Brookings, OR and Winchuck Gardens and Nursery in Harbor, OR.

"Harris Beach II" By Eva Marie Tanner Klaas

I worked on a second Harris Beach painting and found I was too concerned about making mistakes. After watching  the "Perfect Storm" and having a good night's rest, I was able to complete the painting.

"Harris Creek" By Audi Stanton

Here a beautiful landscape by Audi Stanton. This is Harris Creek north of Brookings, Oregon.  She created this incredible art piece with palette knife and oil on canvas. Look at the movement in the grasses  and trees.  The water is moving quickly to the ocean.  It makes you wonder.   Is all this movement due to a passing storm or perhaps there is another one coming.   What does the sky tell us? Again, Audi has captured more than just a painting in her work, "Harris Creek".      This an exceptional piece for any art collector.

"Whaleshead II" by Verna Pooler

Here another watercolor of  Whaleshead Beach north of Brookings, Oregon by Verna Pooler.  It is a brighter, sunnier version.  If  you have ever visited the Oregon coast, the weather changes quickly.  It can go from stormy to sunny in just a few minutes.  Verna captured both in her beautiful watercolors, "Whaleshead I" and "Whaleshead II".
Currently, her watercolor, "Whaleshead I", is for sale at the Manely Art Center. They are open Tuesday through Sunday.

Autumn's River by Eva Marie Tanner Klaas

"Autumns' River" 12X16 Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
I don't like to waste my palette paint. If you are an oil painter, you know what I mean. I mix piles of color and may not use it all. I put this paint onto an unsuccessful painting and create a palette painting. Here is my palette painting I named "Autumn's River".  The paint is thick. I had my paint palette in the back of my car on a warm day. The paint started to dry so instead of discarding it, I created this piece. I love the thick texture.

"Docked" by Eva Marie Tanner Klaas

"Docked" 8x10 Oil on canvas board
This is a boat docked at the Brookings/Harbor Port.  The dock has been damaged perhaps by the tsunami but it still a working dock.
To me this was a complex subject. This meant I had to set up a game plan before attempting to paint it.  Therefore, I spent the morning cropping the original photo into several different compositions until I was happy with this one.  I constantly checked my proportions while drawing.   I have a tendency not to measure consistently because I just want to jump into the painting. This creates too many frustrating problems later on and  results in poor artwork. I used a limited palette to work on my problem with  values and I took my time analyzing the direction of the brush strokes due to the different planes.  Sounds exhausting, doesn't it?  It is. But in my mind, it was good study in values, perspective and proportions.

"Little J" By Eva Marie Tanner Klaas

This is a painting I  did of the boat name Little J located at the Brookings/Harbor Port in Oregon.  I have spent a lot of time at the port painting the boats the last couple of years. It is all about seeing and practicing.  (Yes - practice, practice, practice).  I am trying to keep the background abstract, limiting the detail in the middle ground and detailing only my focal point. I am  using a limited palette to work on my values.
"Little J" 9x12 Oil on Canvas
If you want to visit the port, it is before the bridge to Brookings, Oregon heading north on 101 and after the bridge heading south.   It a lovely port by the Chetco River and the Pacific ocean.  A wonderful place to site see and, of course, a wonderful place to paint.

"Lawn Ornament II" By Eva Marie Tanner Klaas

I took a photo of this pickup truck on a lawn after I painted it on a Wednesday plein air get-together. The truck owner assured me that it would be there for a few months because he couldn't afford to fix it. A couple of weeks later, it was gone. I was glad I took a photo.
This was painted with a limited palette so I would focus on the values. I simplified the background. I tried not to get too detailed with the truck. I can see a slight perspective issue with the headlights. I will fix that later.
Anyway, here is my 9x12 painting of Lawn Ornament II.

Audi Stanton's Landslide

Audi Stanton's ability to find beauty demonstrates the heart of a true artist.  Here is a wonderful example with her current artwork appropriately named "Landslide".  The pine tree and rocks are painted in such a way that they appear to be sliding off the hill side. This movement holds our attention and lets us know there could be danger.  This is an outstanding work of art for any art collector.  For more information contact brookingscoastalpleinair@gmail.com.

Eva Marie Tanner Klaas' "Tea Time"

"Tea time" 8x10 Oil with palette knife with canvas on board
Here is Eva Marie Tanner Klaas' study called "Tea Time." This was painted with palette knife which allows her to layer color one after the other. No muddy brush strokes here. The tablecloth color is created with layers of pink, yellow and then purple with a lot of white.  The background color is blue, red, orange, yellow, magenta and green.  The teapot's light side is orange, yellow, red, magenta, pink, bright green and a touch of white.  The shadow side is magenta, orange, yellow, pinks , bright green, blue and purple and a touch of white. The cast shadow has purple, blue, pink, magenta and white.  The grapes light side is yellow, blue, pink, bright green and some white. The shadows side is blue, purple, green, yellow, pink and a touch of white. The shadow has blue, purple, pink, green and a more white. Each of these color is layered upon each other to keep the color underneath. You don't blend too much unless you want a duller effect.  Color relationship is important when painting this. The green grapes and lavender tablecloth all reflect into the clay pot.

UPDATE: Audi Stanton Has A New Show At Wright's Custom Framing

Audi Stanton is currently showing her large acrylic collages in the small gallery at Wright's Custom Framing in Brookings. (509 Chetco Ave. 541-469-7900) The first reaction people have is: WOW! She has always had a passion for metal sculptures, but was never inclined to make them herself. She invented a way to have faux metal sculptures in spite of not ever working with metals. Her work is made from heavy watercolor paper painted with metallic acrylic paints and enhanced with various textures. They cast wonderful shadows on the wall because they are hung a little bit away from the wall at any angle you like! Certainly decorator pieces. Some of the acrylic collages are very colorful, happy and fun. For example: "Yellow and Blue Jazz" and "Carnival"  will put a big smile on your face!  An outstanding show.

Painting The Town

When the weather is good, a few of us get together to paint the town in the evening  We decide where to paint and spend about two hours drawing and creating a cityscape. This is great practice with perspective, simplifying and being decisive. The sun sets fast so you can't fuss with your work. Here are a few of Eva Marie Tanner Klaas' pieces from the last two weeks.
