Verna's Wheelbarrow Watercolor
Verna painted this watercolor at the Winchuck Garden and Nursery. It was a foggy day. Look how beautifully she rendered this piece. She was able to keep the white of the paper and put enough detail to read the garden scene. Lovely.

Plein Air and Fog
Plein air painting is a little more difficult in the fog because there aren't any shadows and everything is cool in color. Here is Kathy, Verna and myself, Eva Marie, painting together. It was a good day despite the fog... which, of course, lifted after we finished our paintings.

Painting in the Park With Verna
Last Sunday, it was a gorgeous day but a bit too windy to paint on the coast. So we headed to the Brookings' Azalea Park. Verna Pooler is shown here painting a well know landmark. What a perfect place to paint plein air paint. During the summer, there is live music every Sunday.

Best Places To Plein Air Paint in Brookings, OR - Lone Ranch
Lone Ranch is a beach located north of Brookings, OR. You can park very close to the beach, pop your trunk, pull out your art gear and start painting. There are a several unique sea stacks, a sandy beach with accessible tide pools and land formations. Plenty of nice compositions since you have the ocean meeting the sky in the background, the beach in the foreground and sea stacks in between. Great place to practice and create your seascapes.

Azalea Park is a 33 acre park located in Brookings, OR. It is beautifully maintained and the gardens are stunning. There is a Capella with a view of the Brookings Harbor port. Behind the baseball field there is a view of the Chetco River and mountains.
You can spend a life time painting the trails and plants there which include 5 varieties of azaleas. You don't have to pack your art supplies very far to find something to paint. Good shade around to keep the glare off your painting. There are benches where you can sit and sketch.

Best Places to Plein Air Paint In Brookings - Port Of Brookings
The Port of Brookings is located off of 101 between Harbor and Brookings, OR. What makes this a fantastic place to plein air paint is that you have everything you could possible want in a work of art.
Boats of all types and sizes, interesting architecture, the Checto River, the Pacific Ocean, birds, several types of seals, jetty cats, campsites with tents and trailers, surfers, stacks of crabs pots... I think you are getting the picture. It is as if the best of Carmel, California was purposely recreated and placed here.
During the summer, there are events including a Saturday Market on the boardwalk. Which means, of course, more stuff to paint.
Plenty of parking and , of course, restrooms.

Best Places to Plein Air Paint In Brookings - Mouth of the Winchuck River
I have said it before their are thousands of paintings at the mouth of the Winchuck River. Just painting there today, there were fishermen fishing for surf perch, a bald eagle flew by, a harbor seal watched us paint, dogs and their masters were enjoying their time outside and , of course, there were a few of us Brookings Coastal Plein Air Artists painting away, too.
This is a great place to paint. You have layers of mountains, deciduous and conifer trees, ocean and river, rocks, driftwood and variety of grasses. If you are a plein air enthusiast, I recommend the mouth of the Winchuck River on 101 south of Brookings.

New Work By Verna Pooler
Verna Pooler has new work at the Winchuck Gardens and Nursery located south of Brookings, OR. Here is one example of her latest watercolor pieces. It is a wild rhododendron she painted while she was north of Brookings. A blooming rhododendron is a sign that summer is not far off.
Verna painted this piece on watercolor paper she secured over wooden stretcher bars in the style of gallery wrapped canvas. It is sealed with a protective finish. What a wonderful summer memory this watercolor would make.
