Day 8 - "Orange and Blue Study" By Eva Marie Tanner Klaas

Day 8 of the 30 paintings in 30 day challenge by Leslie Saeta.  I continue to take weekly classes  to improve my work . This piece "Orange and Blue" is a study from this week's class. I take two sessions in one day  and paint two studies.  My goal this year  is to improve my values, create beautiful under paintings and improve my brushwork.  That means standing at an easel for 7 hours with a break between classes.  It isn't easy but if I want to be a better plein air painter, painting still life is the best way to learn. 
This last year,  I started painting these studies on canvas sheets where I write my notes on the back. I did the same when I painted on board.  I just find the canvas sheets easier to store. 
Tip - The notes on the back are lessons learned.   I have stacks of these in my home where I can see my successes and review the notes.  I write the notes with a sharpie.

Day 7 of 30 Paintings in 30 Day - "Changing Weather" By Eva Marie Tanner Klaas

It was time to clean my palette so I created this 6x6 palette knife piece I call "Changing Weather".  So whatever is left over on my palette, I create a painting. This one was fun. On the Oregon coast, the weather can change in a few minutes. The moment the sun comes out, we all run to get our errands done, walk the dog or head to the beach. When the clouds return, most of us return to our homes or sit in the car to wait it out. I love it. If you own an umbrella, we all know you are probably not from around here. We don't need no stinky umbrellas.

Day 5 - Value Study V -"Joy " By Jennifer Thompson

Day 4 of the 30 in 30 Paint Challenge offered by Leslie Saeta.  Value Study V; Joy. This one was hard. Because the subject was very personal, my daughter who is now grown and about to ship out, I tightened up. I tightened up so much that now I am done my arms ache and during the session, I found myself holding my breath. My time for these studies is very limited...the duration of a two-year-old's nap! My youngest is at sea, deployed, so our grandson lives with us. A third daughter is also deployed at sea. All my children. This painting challenge is helping me work through the worry and grief and the time spent painting is healing.

This is a painting of a house on the beach in Brookings, Oregon. It sits on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The azaleas were in bloom and it was a warm day when I took the picture.
I struggled with the values with this. Why? It was from a photograph. Every thing was very dark or washed out even though it was a good photo. That is why I prefer to paint from life than photo. I call this piece "Garden Gateway".
