Iris Color Study - By Eva Marie Tanner Klaas

This is a finished piece of a still life study.   The focal area is the iris in front of the vase. It is more defined than the rest of the painting.  It has more contrast, sharper edges and description.  The rest of the irises are soft and not has defined.  The background, shadow, vase and tabletop does not distract you. Your eyes should go the focal point. The front iris.
When adding color, you need to stand back at a viewing distance to ensure the color is showing but not in a sweet way - IE having too much chroma. You dab a color and step back. If it is readable and works, then you continue with that color. If not, mix, dab and try again. This is the same method with changing value.
I did not start with a transparent wash. Instead, I mixed my colors and carefully loaded my brush with paint  and used short brush strokes. This allowed  me to "layer" the color. This means you must think and be precise with each stroke so you can leave the colors underneath. It takes a lot of concentration.
Great lesson. Great instruction.

Audi Stanton's Experience About The 30 Days 30 Paintings Challenge

Hi Eva

I want to thank you for inviting me to join the 30 day, 30 paintings challenge with Leslie Saeta. Especially thanks  for doing all of the technical work that I don't understand. Just like last summer, when we tried to do one painting a day, the best thing the challenge taught me was to put down the paint as correctly as I could the first time and try not to go back and mess around with it. I think the painting always gets much worse when you do that! It was fun, interesting and a great experience. Thank you!

Eva Marie Tanner Klaas' Comments About the 30 Days 30 Paintings Challenge By Leslie Saeta

I usually paint everyday but I found the challenge put more pressure than I thought I would feel. I think because I wanted a good painting to post and that isn't always the case. The best part was seeing all the work and the wonderful comments.  Overall, I loved the challenge.  Thank you, Leslie Saeta, again.

Jennifer Thomson's Response To The 30 Days 30 Paintings Challenge

What have I learned?? Painting is a part of me and I need it. It alternately soothes my soul and ruffles my feathers. On a more practical note, I have a new appreciation for the role of value studies that I never had before! Now bring on the color!!!

Verna Pooler Talks About Her Experience In The 30 Days 30 Paintings Challenge

In response to my experiences in the 30 day challenge, I needed the extra motivation and involvement with my plein air group and other artist.  To be included in the challenge was an honor as I am one of those artists who lacks confidence.  I always think that the painting should be better...how do I improve?  Should I go back to drawing, values, colors or just paint and explore.  I failed to reply to those individuals that commented on my work.  I tried the first time but not be computer savvy when it rejected my comments and wouldn't let me sign in...I failed to explore how, for which I apologize. I do appreciate their comments of encouragement that maybe I am starting to do a few things right.  I enjoyed the challenge and feel that I learned along the way, but couldn't keep that pace.  I am exhausted and must catch up on my responsibilities.  I especially want to thank Leslie Saeta for allowing all the artists to join in with her in the challenge, my artist friend for posting my painting and all of those who commented on my watercolors.  It was interesting to see the wide variety of paintings and styles.

Day 30 - Value Study XXX; "My Neighborhood - J-Ben's Place 2" By Jennifer Thompson

Day 30 of the 30 Days 30 Paintings by Leslie Saeta. Value Study XXX; "My Neighborhood - J-Ben's Place 2". I can't believe this is the last day of the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge! We made it! I am exhausted and yet exhilarated and inspired. Congratulations fellow artists and thank you to all who encouraged along the way.  P.S. Now that I have painted JBen's Place twice and stuck fairly close to what is there, I think I am finally ready to cut down that overgrown Yew tree!! It sticks out like a sore thumb and I don't think anyone has seen that corner of the house in 60 years!!

Day 27 - "My Neighborhood - Center Ten" By Jennifer Thompson

Day 27 of the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge by Leslie Saeta. Value Study XXVII; "My Neighborhood - Center Ten" Why did Grandpa J-Ben call that parcel the "Center Ten"? Because it was the center ten-acre block of pears. Not fanciful or imaginative but highly practical, as I am told he was. From this vantage at the top of Hyatt's drive, you look down on this block and on this icy January day, the hills to the north are only just barely visible due to the fog.

Day 27 - "David, Looen Up" By Eva Marie Tanner Klaas

Day 27 of the 30 Days 30 Paintings by Leslie Saeta.  I took all my mixed oil colors  left over on my palette and had some fun. I have a statue of Michelangelo's David. I grabbed a  discarded canvas  to let the paint fly and danced like no one was watching. Notice the look on David's face.
