Floral Study By Eva Marie Tanner-Klaas

This is my floral study with transparent under paintings that I painted yesterday.  The goal is to keep the beautiful under painting while layering opaque color over it. You have to be very "present" when painting this method; else, you will lose the under painting.

Know Your Tendencies By Eva Marie Tanner Klaas

Learning composition is important when drawing and painting. Sounds obvious, doesn't it?  One of the important tools when learning art is to know your tendencies. I have heard this over and over again with the classes I take.

I have a tendency to put everything right in the middle of the canvas and I make objects too short. These are two of my tendencies so I have to be aware of them when I am drawing and painting.   

To correct this, I was taught to draw a few compositional value sketches and crop them until I get a good composition. I have to repeatedly measure objects to ensure they are tall enough. 

In my recent class  with art instructor Randy Blasquez's,  she had us paint notans and timed us. It was a very successful lesson.  You can see examples at  evamarietannerklaas.blogspot.com.

In this second lily field study, I used cool red under paintings. Magenta, red oxide and alizarin crimson.  I added more color to this study. The previous study was a limited palette. I am focusing on perspective, distance and clouds.

"Waiting For The Lilies" By Eva Marie Tanner-Klaas

This is an 8x10 oil study of the lily fields south of Brookings, Oregon I named "Waiting For The Lilies". This field is part of  one of largest lily growers in the world.
 I wanted to study distance, perspective and clouds in this piece. I worked out my values with a drawing with three values. I did not put an under painting on the canvas. Instead I blocked in the values with transparent paints. This was a quick study so I would not overwork it.This artwork and others will be available at the Manley Art Center from March to April on the classroom panel walls.

The Beauty of Limited Palettes By Eva Marie Tanner Klaas

Like most artists, I continue my art studies to improve my work. Here are two homework assignments where a limited palette was used. In these examples only 3 - yes 3 - colors are used. I used a black, a white and transparent red oxide. The black is considered a blue.
